What the course covers

This course is suitable for new staff and as an update. Fire safety is also available as part of a mandatory update session covering a number of topics in one day. This course is not suitable for individuals wishing to train as a Fire Marshall. This course is based on national occupational standards and meets competence for unit HSC 027 as well as the induction framework for new staff.

This course is delivered using a range of exercise but does not include any practical demonstrations of putting out fires. It is delivered in a fun way and includes a knowledge check at the end to check learning. Local fire procedures can be incorporated for organisations that take part in the scoping exercise available on all courses. 
 
Course Outcomes 
 
At the end of the session personnel will:
  • Understand the composition of fire
  • Understand how fires spread
  • Know the main causes of fire
  • Appreciate basic fire precautions
  • Understand the importance of good housekeeping
  • Appreciate the importance of the Means of Escape
  • Know what actions to take on discovering a fire
  • Be able to identify the main classes of fire
  • Be able to identify each type of fire extinguisher
  • Know how and when to use different fire extinguishers

Candidates are directed to take the following action post training:
  • Make themselves aware of the company’s fire drill and evacuation procedures. 
  • Make themselves aware of the positioning of fire fighting equipment, fire alarms and the fire alarm panel.
  • Be aware of their responsibilities in implementing a drill, evacuation etc..
  • Be aware of the company’s fire risk assessments.
  • Provide feedback to the person responsible for fire safety procedures on the effectiveness of the fire drills.
  • Be constantly alert to the possibility of fire hazards in your area of responsibility
  • Report any new potential fire hazards for review and evaluation of the fire safety procedures to the person responsible
